workshop supervisor / team leader

Chichester Depot | Full Time | 47.5hpw

Reporting to the Group Transport Manager, you will responsible for supervising the day to day running of our Vehicle Workshop. By organising and leading the team, you will be required to ensure that the Group Vehicle Fleet and plant equipment are maintained to the required standards. Please note that this is a hands on role so you will be required to support the HGV Technicians in carrying out day to day tasks.


The department is responsible for maintaining/repairing  the company’s HGV fleet of predominantly rigid crane vehicles & small vans/tippers.  The position will see you working Monday to Friday 7.00am to 17.00pm, there also may be the need for overtime from time to time.

Key Responsibilities


  • To promote the company’s core values, to lead the team by example and provide good internal service to our depots/departments.

  • Manage the maintenance including repairs of all vehicles and equipment maintained by the workshop department by carrying out scheduled servicing and implementing preventative maintenance (includes Plant and Company Fleet) in accordance with DVSA & manufacture requirements/guidance. Ensuring that legal compliance is met and vehicles remain roadworthy.

  • Maintain the company’s high MOT pass rate for all vehicle classes.

  • With assistance from Workshop Administrator plan, allocate and arrange all maintenance activities within the department and liaise with depots accordingly.

  • Ensure that vehicle maintenance records are completed by Technicians as per DVSA guidelines/company requirements  and correctly recorded (using Truckfile System).

  • With the assistance of the Workshop Administrator, ensure that all vehicle records are kept up to date in accordance with both company and external legislative agency requirements.

  • Liaise and allocate workshop space as required with external technicians for repairs of Company vehicles or machines. 

  • Arrange and manage with external suppliers the provision of services and procurement of parts.

  • To assist with breakdown service that we provide to the fleet. This is to include an out of hours service as and when required.

  • Ensure that the vehicle defect reporting system is maintained.

  • Assist the Group Transport manager in ensuring overall compliance across the Cover’s group is met and that workshop staff are suitably trained/developed to meet needs/requirements of department.

  • Maintain a clean and tidy workplace environment within the department.

  • To ensure that the  workshop department adhere to Health and Safety standards and to ensure that suitable control measures are in place and followed by all staff.

  •  If requested, carry out workshop staff appraisals and assist with any other HR matters regarding workshop staff.


Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Previous Supervisory Experience is desirable however not essential as Team Leadership training will be provided to the successful candidate.

  • Experienced fitter with chassis and MOT preparation experience, Hiab crane operational experience preferred but not essential as training will be provided.

  • Previous experience of working on HGV's together with basic welding, hydraulic and auto electrical skills are desirable but not essential

  • Understanding of DVSA (Transport) requirements

  • Excellent knowledge of vehicle inspection standards and scheduled maintenance requirements

  • Able to work well and safely as part of a team

  • Able to demonstrate initiative and work unsupervised

  • Able to work to tight deadlines, paying close attention to detail

  • HGV Licence preferred (Cat C & C+E)

  • Good team player with good communication skills
